ABOUT US

History

Fragment and reconstruction of a sundial made of stoneThe museum houses about 400 objects found on the surface of the great Roman centuriazione of Adria, that has been recently located in the countryside between Adria and Rovigo. About 350 archaeological sites have been located thanks to a methodical surface research authorized by the Veneto Archaeological Objects Department.

The Museum has teaching purposes and is divided into four sections:
a) the Roman centuriazione in general and the centuriazione of Adria in particular
b)
the surface archaeological research
c)
the Roman farmers’ activity during the centuriazione
d) the traces left by Veneto populations before the Romans

In 1990, the Villadose Archaeological Group set the “Teaching Archaeological Exhibition on the Roman centuriazione” or Museum of the Centuriazione. The Group runs the Museum on behalf of the Municipal Administration. The exhibition is hosted in the old residence of Patella Family, a palace that is presently the seat of the Town Hall. The Patella Family settled in Rovigo coming from Chioggia, and later, in 1470, they settled in Villadose when Borso d’Este invested the family with the feoff of Villadose, formerly belonged to the Earls of Padua.
The palace was built between the end of 1500 and the beginning of 1600 and shows the traces of Ferrara influence. Its architect probably belonged to the school of Giobatta Aleotti (1546 - 1636) who was the architect of Alfonso d’Este, duke of Ferrara.

The exhibition was officially open on August, 26, 1990. It shows only the finds picked up from the surface in the great centuriazione extending from Adria to Rovigo. The Villadose municipal territory is included in the old agrarian plan. As many as 108 archaeological sites of the Roman age intertwisted in hinges and principal Roman roads, were located during methodical surface researches. Besides, bronze votive objects of the Veneto tradition and coins (drachmas) issued in Veneto were found in at least 16 sites.

Themes

The exhibition is divided into three sections:
the first one
deals with the Roman centuriazione in general and the centuriazione in Villadose in particular,
the second deals
with some activities carried out by inhabitants of the centuriazione, that can be documented thanks to the discovery of particular finds
the third
shows the results of the researches in progress and outlines the open questions requiring further surveys.

We have recently added a new section dealing with the testimonies of Veneto culture, found in different countryside sites of the centuriazione.
