Here there is a list of some of the subjects treated in the learning path:
The discovery of the centuriazione
The first article mentioning the centuriazione of Adria dates back to 1984 and was written by R. Peretto and E. Zerbinati.
The discovery was due to a thorough interpretation of aerial photographs.
The reading of aerial photographs
We explain the criteria of reading the marks that may be seen on the ground and on the vegetation. The marks of foundations and Roman roads are copied in the cartographic map.
The surface research
We present the procedures followed in the study of the territory and the results of researches, by showing technical maps where the archaeological sites are marked.
The brick manufacture
All the varieties of Roman bricks are exhibited, together with a choice of stamps on bricks made in private kilns and in imperial kilns. There are also curved bricks and parallelepiped-shaped small bricks, used in the exhibit reconstruction of part of a well and of a paving.
The structural stones
There are building stones that where frequently used for farmers’ houses, namely the red gypsum and the trachyte, both coming from the quarries of the Euganean Hills. You can also admire fragments of very fine marbles for covering used in residential houses and country cottages.
The coins
There are about 150 coins that give us an idea of the different populations of the centuriazione, from II cen. B.C., with Venetic drachmas and republican "assi", to IV cen. A.D., when the land was certainly left.
Sepulchres and sacred rites
There are the lower parts of some urns of trachyte and the reconstruction of a burial box with burial objects. A number of pictures and simple writings explain the religion and rites of the Roman farmers.
Pottery
There are fragments and pieces of containers of every kind of pottery existing in the Roman age. Marks and writings help us understand their manufacture.
The balances
There is a rich collection of balance weights made of stone, bronze and lead, that help us know of lively trades in the areas of the centuriazione.
Toys and games
There are pieces for games and the game of “trea” graffito designed on a big tile, as well as some dices and small balls made of lead and fired clay.
Body treatment and jewels
In the central glass case you can see fragments of strigil used for personal hygiene, and many jewels (rings, pearls, bracelets, pendants, etc.). Two phallus-shaped lucky charms are displayed.
The Veneto civilization before the Romanization
A glass case contains many finds of the last period of ancient Veneto people (II cen. B.C.) coming from some twenty sites of the centuriazione, especially small bronzes and votive pieces, grey pieces of pottery and some silver coins.
For more information
We suggest to read the book: “La centuriazione dell’agro di Adria” (The centuriazione of Adria countryside) Linea AGS Edizioni (Phone 0425 95018), Stanghella 1993. The book consists of four sections: in the first one, of about 100 pages, there are school forms on the centuriazione and the Roman farmers’ activities, with the pictures of the most significant objects found in the surface research. In the second part, professor Enrico Zerbinati presents the history of the finds of the territories of the centuriazione from 1500 to the present day. In the third section there are the proceedings of the congress on the centuriazione of Adria countryside, that took place in Villadose on June, 13, 1992, during which some scholars presented studies and researches about the country planning and about the items found.
Finally in the fourth part, Mr Enrico Maragno presents the documents of 108 archaeological sites located round Villadose.
You can get more detailed information in the book: “La ricerca archeologica di superficie in area padana” (The surface archaeological research in the Po region), Linea AGS Edizioni (Phone 0425 95018), Stanghella 1995, where you can find the report of the methodical surface research on 9400 hectares of territory of the centuriazione.
