History

Biconical bent-handled cup, axe-shaped. The upper connection of the handle is 2 cm from the cup edge while the handle lower connection is on the cup larger. Colour: hazelnut-reddish brown, smooth surface. The Municipal Archaeological Museum of Castelnovo Bariano was inaugurated in September 1982 with the aim of spreading our territory's culture and preserving the objects found in this area. Initially some of the exhibits displayed in some rooms came to light during the surface exploration of the site of Canàr, belonging to the Ancient Bronze Age.

Afterwards the archaeological findings of different historical periods, such as the Renaissance objects of Torretta, increased in number thanks to local discoveries.

For many years this Museum had its location at the Municipality's premises. At present the Museum is housed at the Primary School of San Pietro Polesine, inaugurated in May 1999.

The second room exhibits handmade products coming from the surface explorations of the sites in Canova and Marola (Middle and Late Bronze Age), besides the findings of the Pre-Roman and Roman Ages; suitable explanations are provided as well.

The third room exhibits handmade products, graffiti and Renaissance paintings of the period found among the ruins of the tower of Torretta; suitable explanations are provided as well.

The management of the museum was assigned by the local government of Castelnovo Bariano to "Traspadana Ferrarese", a voluntary association housed in Castelnovo Bariano which not only arranges opening times and guided tours but is directly involved in the recovery of fragments coming from other excavations in association with bodies of the Cultural Assets Office of Veneto.

The museum attends to both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Moreover the association and the museum carry out educational activities in schools.
